5 Online Dating Documentaries That You Have To See
Ahh Online Dating… Such a lovely aspect of our modern lives.
Can you imagine what it was back in the day? Not being able to communicate with anyone outside your immediate location at any given time… Being restricted to finding partners only from the people you could interact with in real life…
Even right now, as I’m writing this article I’m sitting on Tinder, chatting to some of my matches, setting up dates and everything… I can’t possibly imagine what my life would be without this (Not that I do it all the time… I go out and meet women the ordinary way too).
My point is: Online Dating is HUGE and we’ve grown to take it for granted.
That being said… Most of us don’t really know how it works, how to use it, how to get the most out of it, what to expect, and much-much more… We just log onto Tinder and swipe a bit, get some matches and say “Hi” or something, not knowing what the hell is happening at any point.
So much so, that there are a TON of Online Dating Documentaries out there, tackling the intricacies and difficulties of Online Dating.
And that’s what we’re here for. In this short article you’ll find the 5 Online Dating Documentaries That You Have To See …
And without further ado, let’s go straight to the first one:
1. The Mobile Love Industry
Year: 2015
Author: VICE
Theme: Is Online Dating causing a detrimental change in the way we behave in our relationship and how we view them?
The Mobile Love Industry is a very good Online Dating Documentary that raises a TON of questions.
On one hand (like we’ve discussed) Online Dating can be such a handful: meeting you with people that can possibly be just out of reach and giving you the opportunity to connect and build something with those people.
But on the other hand, it creates an incredibly convenient, easy-to-use, and stress-free interaction that it basically sucks the interesting and challenging part of meeting a potential mate and attracting them in a meaningful way – out.
Is this enough to destroy the way we look at relationships? VICE doesn’t want to be subjective on this so it leaves the viewer to decide for themselves. What VICE does do is present the real facts about the world we live in, with Online Dating in it.
Another HUGE thing that the Online Dating Documentary points out is the threat of bad people using Online Dating as a tool. Scams and other nefarious acts are extremely common online and online dating platforms aren’t safe either.
All in all, a great Online Dating Documentary that’s not too long (it’s only about 30 minutes) so you can watch it quickly if you’re looking for something thought-provoking.
But let’s move on to the second documentary on our list:
2. The Digital Love Industry
Year: 2014
Author: VICE
Theme: Is technology evolving so fast that it can take over even our intimacy and replace it with something else?
Another one from VICE that’s also brilliant and quite short (again, about 30 minutes so it won’t take much time to watch).
This one takes a different approach: Can technology replace intimacy (even physical) between people?
You may be surprised, but there’s actual technology being developed that can allow you to have sexual intercourse in Virtual Reality with basically any figure you so desire and design (even professional porn stars).
That’s right! There’s technology that can simulate sex.
Imagine what that could do for long-distance relationship… You could be in America while your partner is in England and you could experience sex between you two. Incredible, right?
Well, as with all good (I guess) things, there come the bad implications. VICE warns that this technology could lead to some unexpected issues.
For example, what would it do to actual intimacy?
If we can hop into virtual reality and get sex on demand whenever we feel like it, will we forsake the actual thing? Maybe it’ll be easier for some and thus it will completely destroy connections and intimacy between humans… Or will our basic instincts to be with another human being kick in?
This Online Dating Documentary perfectly touches upon these and many more questions. And that’s why it’s a good one to check out.
Again, VICE only offers the questions, it’s the viewer who should seek the answers and decide for themselves.
3. Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On
LINK: found on netflix
Year: 2017
Author: Netflix
Theme: What’s the impact of Porn and Dating Apps on our everyday lifestyle choices?
This is a six-part Online Dating Documentary made by Netflix that tackles the changes in our lifestyles when things such as porn and virtual relationships are sooo easy to get to they’re practically with us everywhere we go.
The show is based on the 2015 movie “Hot Girls Wanted”. And it beautifully portrays the questions raised in the movie its adapting.
Each of the 6 episodes promises to take the viewer on a thought-provoking ride, making them ask questions on serious topics such as intimacy, self-promotion, race and gender, connection, and more.
It’s also one of the newest Online Dating Documentaries out there so I definitely suggest checking it out for yourself. It’s made by Netflix so you know where to find it and that it’ll be a quality production…
4. The Lonely Italian
LINK: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3261182/
Year: 2015
Author: Lee Farber
Theme: The journey of a young Italian man looking for love online in America.
This actually started as a Kickstarter. Basically, the producers filmed the whole thing and then asked for crowdfunding in order to get the documentary in a lively, viewable format. Talk about a journey.
And similarly, the documentary is about a journey. Not about an Italian guy traveling around the world, but about him trying to connect with members of the opposite sex.
And the turning point is that our hero – Domenico Nesci – is having troubles because all of the females are too busy being on their phones and online looking for love there, instead of looking around in the real world.
That’s why he decides to join them and creates a profile on all online dating platforms that he can find.
In the end he not only goes through a lot of the experiences that he was looking for initially, but a TON of introspection and thought-provoking scenarios that the viewer can also enjoy.
All in all, I’d definitely watch this one, it promises a TON and it delivers it all and more on top of that.
5. Online Dating Is…
Year: 2015
Author: Oscar Nilsson
Theme: What is online dating?
This is probably the shortest (a bit under 8 minutes) Online Dating Documentary that I’ve found while doing research on the topic.
It’s a very short and sweet production that begins (and ends) with clips of people that give their opinion on Online Dating and what it is.
Just from those alone, you can see how many mixed feelings people have about the topic and you can begin to wonder how these feelings and decisions have been articulated.
There’s people who like it, those who don’t those who hate it, and those who absolutely love it.
From then on, the documentary follows the story of – Eunice – a 36-year-old woman who’s never used it before.
While she uses it you see brief clips of her reactions and what her thought process is when she’s swiping the different male profiles she encounters on Tinder (take notes guys, haha).
Then she very briefly shares her experience with a date she’s had with a man she met on Tinder.
Throughout the whole video there are cuts to experts on Relationships and Online Dating that express their opinions on the whole topic.
Overall, this vey-very short Online Dating Documentary shows us that this almost new (it’s not very new at this point, is it) technology isn’t something that’s either only good or only bad. It has its nuances and it depends from person to person: some find it great, while others, not-so-much…
Aaan that concludes our 5 Online Dating Documentaries That You Have To See. I hope that you enjoyed this short article and maybe even watched a few (or all) of the documentaries on this list.
If I were to pick favorites it would definitely be number 5: Online Dating Is…
I just love that it’s a short and sweet, straight to the point in style. It also perfectly conveys the mixed feelings that everyone has with Online Dating.
